Here at Talener, we talk a lot about goals. And today in our NYC office, our visitor-for-the-day Kim Siembieda from Talener Boston presented a great meeting for our team on how to better to prepare, focus, and achieve personal and professional goals. While Kim focused primarily on specific goals for our internal employees, we felt her points were definitely relevant to a wider audience – whether you’re looking to make the next step in your career, take on more at your current job or make a change in another area of your life. Without further ado, here are some of Kim’s suggestions:
Be Narrow and Realistic: The more specific you can be about your goal, the more likely you are to achieve it. Stay away from generic resolutions and instead target specific action-items to make sure you stay the course.
Habit-Forming Takes Patience: Change doesn’t happen overnight, especially for something serious like a professional goal. Don’t expect to form lifelong habits with a snap of your fingers. Ingraining change takes much longer, so think months and years instead of days and weeks. During the journey don’t forget to track your progress to see how changes have formed.
Be Vocal: Don’t keep your ambitions to yourself. Say your goals out loud to yourself, write them down, and make sure others are aware too. Have your friends and family help you stay on course, but…
Do It For You: Don’t just set goals arbitrarily because your manager or someone else expects you to. It’ll be harder to stay on track if you’re just going through the motions to please someone else. Find the reason YOU want to achieve the goal.
Expect and Embrace the Roadblocks: What would an ambitious goal be without a challenge? Trips and falls are always part of the learning process. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try all over again.
Seek Help and Look for Competition: No man is an island. In addition to looking for helpers along the way, also look for those who will drive you to stay on your goals through friendly competition. Be creative and collaborative to keep you on track, while also having fun.
