Last night, Talener Group hosted a great evening for Boston’s inspiring lady professionals with delicious food and wine. We had the pleasure to have Susan M. (Chaisson) Schueller as our guest speaker for our Women Inspire Technology meetup. Susan is a software engineer in the Metropolitan Boston area. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Information Technology part-time at her alma mater, UMass Lowell, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. Susan’s diverse career in software engineering includes experience at companies such as Computervision, Wang Laboratories, Digital, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Polaroid, iRobot, Raytheon and Draper Laboratory. She has been commended by her managers and peers for her teamwork, expertise, focus and mentorship.
Susan is a member of the Society of Women Engineers (Boston Section), IEEE/Women In Engineering (Boston Affinity Group), and the American Society for Quality (Merrimack Valley Section). Through ASQ, she is a Certified Software Quality Engineer. In SWE, Susan volunteers for outreach activities such as “Wow! That’s Engineering” workshops, Girl Scout badge events, panel discussions, career fairs and mentoring.
In addition to engineering, Susan holds great interest in music performance and outreach. She describes music as “a human expression of applied mathematics and physics in a language universally understood and appreciated”. She plays flute, piccolo, alto flute, bass flute and cello. She is a volunteer musician for various New England community music organizations.
Susan enjoys being involved in community service. She participates in events such as the annual Boston AIDs Walk, the Lymphomathon Walk and the MSPCA-Angell Walk for Animals.
Susan asks that everyone take the time to acknowledge those who made a difference in their lives and to be a positive influence on others.
We had a great turnout last night and loved hearing Susan’s story.

“Hot Town, Summer in the City”
Summer time is here and the pace of business may slow down a bit. If your company is not growing, chances are your bosses are probably on vacation, so it’s a great time to get out there and interview. Aside from sweating profusely, this is an excellent chance for candidates to interview and check out some interesting opportunities. These next few months are great time for growing companies to get a lot of interviewing done, especially in our offices. Trust me, all of the Talener AC units are set to the coldest setting possible.
We are excited to announce the launch of our 5th office in Chicago, IL, which will open up on August 5th, 2013. This will be our first non-coastal office. We recently had a management meeting in Chicago which lead to a number of people begging to get out to Chicago to start the office there. At the end of the day, we had a lot of choices and went with the following people:

Talener Group is big fan of promotion from within and creating opportunities for rock stars within our organization. Someone who has recently benefited from this policy is Chris Fanning. Chris started with Talener in our LA office in October of 2011 and came up through the ranks in that office. In May 2013, Chris returned to his roots in New York when he was asked to come and manage the Open Source team in our NYC office. Having already placed his bets on Talener once when he accepted a job in our LA office and moved across country, Chris packed it all in again and moved back. He has been a welcome addition here. If you ask Chris about why he decided to accept a role at Talener, he speaks of a friend who referred him to Talener who had already been working here for a while:
“It seemed like every time we spoke he had closed another deal, gotten a raise or won some sort of contest. Then I heard of some guy doing 17 deals in one month… which topped it off for me. Considering I was with another staffing agency at the time with none of those perks it really caught my attention. Then when I met Mike (Talener’s CEO) and heard about the upward mobility and the merit based promotion system I felt really comfortable with making the jump and moving out to LA to work under Rory who had closed those 17 deals!”
Among the many things Chris loves about working at Talener (besides the aforementioned raises and promotions!), he quickly discovered how much he enjoyed working with people who were coming right out of college. Making the transition out of school to your first job is always tough, then add everything else that comes along with becoming an adult, it can feel overwhelming; so being able to give advice on hurdles he had experienced a few years before was a really good feeling.
Given that Chris has had some experience in the New York Market and in the LA market, we asked him how they are different and he said:
“NY and LA are very different, with NY being well, much more efficient. Companies here are established which makes it much easier to do business. LA has a lot of start ups so you really need to pick and choose who you are going to put time and effort into. Also, Drupal runs the show here in NYC whereas ZEND is king in LA. Both markets are doing really well right now, so either way I’m just happy I have gotten a chance to work in both of them.”
Chris recently proposed to his girlfriend (she said yes!) who doesn’t seem to mind the fact that one of his favorite things to do is compare sunset pictures with Jacob Bearman (currently in our LA office, soon to be in Chicago) on Instagram. He is settling into life here in New York and has even taken up terrace gardening. The ever popular Facebook announced that it would now be adapting the use of hash-tags in June of 2013. This announcement seems slightly overdue as the now ubiquitous symbol has been found on Instagram, Tumblr and other well-known sites aside from the Twitter for quite some time.
Some have expressed concern that this will lead to more pointed and aggressive advertising campaigns on Facebook, making the Facebook experience less desirable to many. However, Facebook does claim that ad revenue was not a major motive behind the decision to add the hash-tag linking to the site. Others are loathing the expected overload of hash-tags in their news feeds fearing that their friends will be “tweeting” unnecessary updates and making the important and relevant news extremely difficult to find.
An interesting thought is the possibility of Facebook stealing Twitter’s user base with the addition of the hash-tag. Will Twitter lose some of its users to the “one-stop shop” mentality of Facebook? Will the now-useful hash-tags simply make surfing Facebook that much easier but not affect Twitter’s traffic at all? What about privacy, is that lost forever with the ability to see all past conversations with the same distinctive, unique marking?
These questions will only be answered in time, but interestingly enough, some view the hash-tag as a finite social tool and see machine learning as the way of the future. Forget the need to add a unique tag to a conversation; machine learning will be able to tell what you are discussing simply by reading your entire post. The only question is, how long will hash-tags last?
Are the days of the hash-tag numbered, or will it evolve with the times and take over the rest of the internet as it has all the giants?

A new website called, “Nara” was developed recently to recommend unfamiliar eateries to users. Their database was built to generate restaurant recommendations in order to provide information on a restaurant’s cuisine, price, and quality; allowing users to broaden their restaurant horizons. When registering to the website you are asked for your favorite eateries, Nara then suggests similar restaurants to your favored ones, and in the same area. The site hopes to expand outside of restaurants to things such as, music, hotels, and shopping; making them a competitor to companies such as Yelp.
Yelp is a recommendation site which generates restaurants from a specific category the person enters into the site (i.e.: Italian Food). An article was posted in SFWeekly titled, “Top 9 Reason’s You Can’t Always Trust Yelp” told the story of a “Yelper” claiming to be a writer for SFWeekly on a restaurant review. SFWeekly’s food editor caught the writer and contacted her. The blogger apologized and said that she tried contacting Yelp but they wouldn’t let her take it down, saying that it was a “personal opinion”. Yelp’s anonymity makes it a difficult site to trust because one doesn’t know if the “Yelper” is in fact who they say they are and/or even stating the truth.
